Acupuncture for Shingles

Evidence suggests that acupuncture medicine can help relieve pain and may have some benefit for providing relief from Postherpetic neuralgia. The condition affects nerve fibers and skin, causing burning pain that lasts long after the rash and blisters of shingles disappear, this is the most common complication of shingles.

A Systematic review and meta-analysis that was done in 2018 show the conclusion of the study indicates [courtesy of NHI Acupuncture for postherpetic neuralgia]:

Acupuncture is safe, but its effect in pain-relieving for PHN was not conclusive given the methodologic defects in the included studies. For the life quality and global impression, the available data were too few to suggest that acupuncture is useful. More large-scale, high-quality RCTs are needed. Trials with sham/placebo acupuncture or blank control should be conducted to detect whether the effect of acupuncture is the specific effect or the placebo effect.
