Sciatica Leg Pain and Acupuncture: How Natural Therapy Provides Relief

Study Finds Acupuncture Reduces Sciatica Pain

A recent study, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, explored acupuncture as a treatment for sciatica. The study included 216 patients with sciatica caused by herniated disks, experiencing leg pain for at least three months. Participants received either 10 sessions of acupuncture or sham acupuncture over a four-week period. Results showed that at the end of week 4, leg pain had decreased by an average of 30.8 points in the acupuncture group, compared to only 4.9 points in the control group. Remarkably, the improvements from acupuncture were still evident a year later.

Understanding Sciatica

Sciatica is a painful condition that typically causes shooting pain down the leg, often accompanied by lower back, hip, and buttock pain. The sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body, can become compressed or pinched, usually due to a herniated disc in the lower back. Sciatica can make daily activities—such as walking, sitting, or working—uncomfortable, so finding effective relief is important.

How Acupuncture Relieves Sciatica Symptoms

Research continues to highlight acupuncture’s effectiveness for relieving sciatica pain. A review of studies found that acupuncture was more effective than non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and topical anti-inflammatory gels in reducing pain intensity for sciatica sufferers. Here are some ways acupuncture provides relief:

  • Blocking Pain Signals: Acupuncture can temporarily block nerves from sending pain signals to the brain, reducing the sensation of pain in the affected areas.

  • Releasing Endorphins: This natural pain-relief method triggers the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, which help decrease discomfort.

  • Enhanced Pain Relief with Electroacupuncture: Electroacupuncture, which involves electrical stimulation of the acupuncture needles, may offer even more intense pain relief than traditional acupuncture, making it a promising option for severe cases.
